Chain Wax PTFE: DIY Bike Maintenance Recipe

Just finished waxing my bike’s chain for the first time! Up until now, I’ve been using lubricant, but I heard that waxing can help make my rides smoother and keep the chain cleaner for longer. It felt like a bit of a project, but I’m excited to share my experience.

Here’s the result of my waxing adventure:

After thoroughly cleaning the chain to remove any old lubricant or grime, I prepared my wax mixture. It took some time, but the process was quite satisfying!

Waxed bike chainIngredients:

  • Chain wax (a blend of paraffin wax and additives)
  • Chain cleaning solution
  • Degreaser
  • Soft cloth or rags
  • Heat source (like a small stove or a hot plate)
  • A container for melting the wax
  • Protective gear (gloves and goggles)

Instructions:

  1. Start by cleaning your bike chain. Use a degreaser and a chain cleaning solution to ensure there is no old lubricant left.
  2. Dry the chain thoroughly with a soft cloth or rags, making sure it’s completely free of moisture.
  3. In a safe, well-ventilated area, set up your heat source and place your container on it to melt the wax.
  4. Once the wax is melted, carefully submerge your clean chain into the wax. Allow it to soak for about 5-10 minutes.
  5. After soaking, lift the chain out of the wax and let any excess wax drip off back into the container.
  6. Hang the chain to cool and harden for another 10 minutes. This will ensure an even coating of wax.
  7. Once the wax has hardened, reinstall the chain back on your bike, and you’re ready to ride!

Overall, this waxing process was straightforward, and I’m eager to see how my bike performs with the waxed chain. If you’re into biking and haven’t tried waxing your chain yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot. It feels great to take care of your gear, and who doesn’t love a smooth ride?
